I officiated a wedding the night before Thanksgiving. Here’s a picture of the happy couple with me and my girlfriend in the midst of what was a pretty wild reception.
Random Thoughts:
I might deter from the usual format here as I have a few random thoughts that I’m dying to share with the world or at least the 30 of you who actually open the email when this gets sent out and give it a read (thank you, you’re the best).
Random Thought #1
I named the newsletter the ‘Josh Wells Weekly,’ but as of late, I haven’t been keeping up with the weekly part. I’m gonna try people but I’m lazy and sometimes busy and sometimes worried no one cares what I think about anything anyways so what’s the point. But today I’m feeling good so I’m gonna make this thing happen. Regardless of how often I decide to write one of these things, I will keep calling it the, ‘Josh Wells Weekly,’ because alliteration is cool and it has my name in it.
Also, isn’t it more of a surprise if I don’t keep a tight schedule? You like surprises and I don’t like keeping tight schedules. It’s a total win-win for everyone.
Random Thought #2 (Weddings)
So I officiate weddings and just about a week ago, I had the honor of officiating my 8th wedding. Officiating can be fun but also nerve wracking. You don’t wanna screw it up, y’know? Like, I can bomb at stand up comedy and live to see another day. But bombing someone’s wedding is a long lasting memory. So that’s sorta scary.
But I try to remember how cool it is to officiate weddings for your friends. I feel like it’s more personal. Like, why have a total stranger come in and then they leave right after and to them it’s just another notch on the wedding belt and they’ll never see you again? Each wedding I’ve officiated has been special to me and I like to think that the couples benefit from having someone in that position who takes it that seriously and considers it that big of a deal, because to me, all eight have been the biggest of deals.
I also like to keep a record, like a sports team. I’m currently 6-2. The 2 in the ‘L’ column signifies divorces. It’s sad but also maybe not because some people just realize a little later into things that they’re not meant to be together and that’s okay too.
Some people like to tell me I should start an officiating business. But I really don’t wanna officiate weddings outside of my social circle. I don’t ever want it to become a chore I do just for the money (I also don’t wanna give up my weekends). Since I’ve been doing it, it’s like a no-brainer to me that every wedding should be officiated by someone you know personally and like.
And it’s so easy. I’m ordained at Universal Life Church. Just google it. You can click a button and be ordained in probably less than a minute unless your phone is slow.
Random Thought #3
I’m turning 40 this year and having a comedy show to celebrate it on Sat, Dec 14th. It’s gonna be a rad time. You should go. Here’s a not so fancy flyer I made in Microsoft Paint:
Comedy Special I Watched Recently:
Mike Birbiglia / The New One
Birbigs is one of my all time faves. And with each special, it seems like he gets better and better. He’s carved his own unique lane in comedy and has grown into probably my all time favorite story teller. In this special, he talks about having his first kid and going from not wanting to have a kid and now having a kid and how it affects his life and it’s so open, honest, and funny. I keep getting into these, ‘Chappelle vs. Burr,’ debates with other people when it comes to stand up comedy but I think Birbigs’ stuff can hang with any of them.
Movies I’ve Watched Recently:
I’ve watched no movies. I KNOW!
TV shows I’m currently watching:
My TV viewing is all over the place.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
I wasn’t binging this but my girlfriend was and I caught on late so I haven’t seen every episode but I love this show so much and it just ended and we’re out of episodes on Hulu and I am sad. I did hear that they’re doing another season so I’m really looking forward to that. This is the most I’ve enjoyed the police ever in my life.
The Crown
Another show the girlfriend’s watching. The premise sounded stupid to me. It’s about the Queen of England and what do I care about the Queen of England? But I sat down and started watching it with her and it’s sooooo fucking interesting. It’s like a documentary or a book rewritten by solid TV writers. I’m sorta hooked but I’ve missed a lot and don’t catch every episode.
It must be mentioned, John Lithgow as Winston Churchill was some mighty fine acting.
King of the Hill
Such a fun show. Mike Judge is a killer. I think my favorite episode so far is the one featuring Green Day where they voice a garage punk band down the street from the Hills (and write the songs for them too). They’re loud and Hank Hill goes over to complain and hijinks ensue. Very fun episode.
South Park
After all these years, South Park is still going hard with the poop jokes. Poop is funny and we should never out grow poop jokes. They pretty much crafted an entire episode around poop (again).
Book I’m Currently Reading:
Assorted: A Short Story Collection
My reading habit has been very poor to non-existent as of late. But I’m about to finish this book. I have 10 pages left. So I should be introducing a new book next time around. Which means this will be the last time I’ll get to plug a book that features friends of mine, people I actually know. So go buy this book. A friend of mine is a friend of yours. It’s a collection of short stories that range from funny to dark to sometimes strange. Get on it!

Album(s) of the week:
Tsunami Bomb / The Spine That Binds
First off- great band name!
Okay, so Tsunami Bomb are punk rock veterans who’ve done their time and been around and here I am, I never listened to anything of there’s. I saw this album and on a whim decided to give it a spin and it was a very fun listen. It’s an upbeat, no dull moments, punk rock experience. So if you’re into that sorta thing, give it a listen.
I did some googling and there’s been some line up changes over the years. So this is probably a weird band to come around late to. But here I am, listening to the last album first. I’ll probably try and work my way backwards through their discography.
Random sports thought of the week:
I’m rooting for Carmelo Anthony in Portland. It’s cool to see the Trailblazers add him to the roster. Anthony is an amazing scorer and if he’s still got gas in the tank (and it seems like he does), it’s almost criminal that he missed any NBA time at all.
Fantasy Football Update: I did not make the playoffs. Current record: 5-8. And although I’m not in the playoffs, I still have a match-up this week because for some reason the season still goes on for the teams that didn’t make the playoffs.
Random pro wrestling thought of the week:
I’m loving the re-branding of Asuka and Kairi Sane as the Kabuki Warriors. They’re so fun as heels and they can both work their asses off in the ring. I hope they’re the tag champs forever. I also hope a reinvigorated Asuka who now spits green mist in the faces of her enemies gets a mega push out of this. She can be the one who takes the belt off Becky. I’d save it for Mania, but they could even do it at the Royal Rumble so that way Asuka could have a fun record of being 2-0 against Becky at the Royal Rumble.

Upcoming Shows
Not a whole lot going on this week, like a couple of things but they’re not like public things, idk it’s weird. I will be at the dentist on Monday, if you really wanna see me at my best.
Anyways, don’t forget about my big birthday show on Sat, Dec 14th! I’m doing 40 minutes for my 40th birthday.
