Telling jokes at General Poors Tavern in Hackensack, NJ. Show produced by the very funny Erin Wohlberg and pic taken by the very funny Artie Del.
If anyone can tell me their super rational reason for the fear of the number 13, I’d love to hear it. I don’t really fear things like numbers. I’m no tough guy though. I’m afraid of most roller coasters and big dogs off leashes.
Random thought of the week:
I’ve been thinking a lot about how unimportant things are and how nothing really matters because in the long run we’ll all be gone soon enough and the planet will one day be engulfed by the sun and any trace of us will be gone forever. I don’t know if that seems heavy or sad but I actually find this line of thinking very liberating. It helps me feel free of a lot of undue pressure I sometimes put on myself. Whenever I think I’m not good enough or I’m fucking up at life, I remember not to take the whole thing so seriously. Lighten up. Enjoy the ride.
But also, don’t get totally lost in the sauce. You still gotta keep up with important things like pay your bills and fight racism.
Movie(s) I recently watched:
Ghost World
I loved, loved, loved this movie. There’s a lot of different things going on in this movie that I totally identify with like Enid’s quest to go against the grain and the deterioration of a friendship and being a weird old dude. This movie succeeds at capturing the challenge to rebel and be weird and the struggle to try and fight the urges of conformity. It’s hard to stay pure and maybe we’re even supposed to change and sell out a little. I don’t know. This movie doesn’t give any answers or solutions. It just tells a story that’s probably as old as time. It feels like the world is always telling us to do it their way and some of us (or maybe most or even all of us) deep down don’t want to but some do and some don’t and some do more than others and the results are always a mixed bag. We’re all living in a Ghost World.
Kalifornia
With a, “K.” I don’t know why. But this movie is dope, well, mostly dope. The beginning premise that is the foundation for the entire story is a little silly, an author and his photographer girlfriend look for strangers to join them on a cross country road trip to check out different sites where serial killers killed people. What could go wrong?
It all goes wrong. Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis are those strangers. The acting is great all around. There’s a fair amount of action and a whole lot of tension and the whole thing is well paced. I highly recommend.
TV shows I’m currently watching:
Bojack Horseman
Finished Season 5. Waiting on Season 6 which drops in 2 or 3 days. I cannot wait, well I can, but I don’t wanna.
South Park
“I’m a goo-man.” Love the, “There Will Be Blood,” reference. This is a pretty good episode that takes shots at eating healthy and plant based foods and all that. Obviously Cartman is not a fan.
Book I’m currently reading:
Ten Ways Not to Commit Suicide: A Memoir / Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and Darrell Dawsey
DMC was adopted and he meets his mom in his adult life and reading about it and how he deals with it is a heavy but also important story. Things go well for him and he’s able to balance and compartmentalize his birth mom and his adoption parents and it’s all ultimately heart warming… but also heavy.
Also, the part about Jam Master Jay dying is forever sad. Gone too soon. There’s been no arrests since his death. It’s just a big ol’ bummer. What can be said? Appreciate your loved ones while they’re still here, life is fragile. Hold on to the good memories. DMC has a lot of love for Jay and also I enjoy how Jay was the dude behind the CLASSIC (has to be in caps) Run DMC style.
Album(s) of the week:
Refused / War Music
I wanted to love this album. What a great title. It’s definitely angry. They got the formula down for what constitutes an angry/hardcore song. But something’s missing. I don’t wanna say it has no soul, but it just feels a little too formulaic. Still, if you’re in the mood for something rigidly ragey, give it a listen.
Random sports thought of the week:
The Yankees are out of the playoffs and the Giants and the Jets don’t look good. Good thing for the NYC/NJ area that the NBA and NHL have begun.
I don’t really watch hockey but I enjoy rooting for the New Jersey Devils because they’re the only sports team that represents the state of New Jersey by name. So from here on out, it’s GO DEVILS!
My football fantasy team finally won a game, snapping a 4 game losing streak. We are now 3-4 and 9th place in a 12 team league. I’m predicting playoffs, baby!!!
Random pro wrestling thought of the week:
I’m so bored with the build up to WWE’s Crown Jewel show in Saudi Arabia. Can we fast forward to the week after already? I think that’ll be WWE’s next chance to be an exciting product. Let’s hope they don’t fuck it up.
